The Stone Roses were amongst the first Alternative or Indie rock bands and just like Happy Mondays were part of the Madchester Movement of the 80’s and 90’s. Formed in 1983 in Manchester UK, it consisted of Ian Brown on vocals, John Squire on guitar, Gary Mounfield on bass and Alan Wren on drums. This was the original line-up. They broke up in 1996 and then reunited then scattered again and have got back together again and had their first live concert in May 2012 in Warrington, UK and according to their website have quite a world tour scheduled.
In the earlier releases most of the cover art was done by the very talented guitarist of the Stone Roses, John Squire, as a tribute to Jackson Pollack. After the group disbanded he immersed himself in art full time. His work is showcased in galleries all over the world. Over time his style has altered and become more his own rather than a Pollack look-alike. In an interview I read online he seems quite derisive of today’s celebrity culture where society is constantly bombarded with images of stars like David Beckam, Cheryl Cole, Rihanna and Lindsay Lohan. Not that he gives a shit about my opinion but I completely agree. However, I’m still trying to figure out what to do about it, while he’s gone on to base some of his artwork on these stars. The concept behind this series is his own. Apparently he first painted each piece so he wasn’t influenced by any particular subject then later named it as he saw fit. I have posted a pic of his work below entitled: David Beckham. Go to his website for more information. (http://www.john-squire.com/)
